AURORA, Colo. – Students, faculty and administrators enjoyed free coffee and pastries this morning at Anschutz Medical Campus as The Commons Cafe opened on the ground floor of the Education 2 North Building.

Richard Krugman, MD, vice chancellor for the Office of Health Affairs and dean of the School of Medicine, cut the “grand opening” ribbon that allowed more than 100 visitors to stream into the new cafe that’s been two years in the making. He was flanked by Jeff Parker, vice chancellor of Administration and Finance; Marguerite Childs, of Academic Resources and Services; David Turnquist, associate vice chancellor for Facilities Management; Professor Mark Earnest, MD, director of Realizing Educational Advancement for Collaborative Health and director of Leadership, Education, Advocacy, Development, Scholarship Track Program; and Maria Portelli, director of Campus Support Services.

Krugman said the cafe, in Room 1205, will be a nice place for students and faculty to sit back and enjoy a cup of coffee and a snack.

“This has been a terrific conception and delivery,” he said of the campus’s newest gathering place. “There was an embryonic process that developed it – through the planning, through facilities, through coming together with it. I think when you see this facility you’ll see how glad we are that it’s here.”

Plush furniture, tables and an inviting service counter with friendly employees greeted the guests. The musical group The Arrhythmias sang popular songs with lyrics cleverly changed to cafe references.

The Commons Cafe provides a central space for students to host interprofessional events and features a state-of-the-art sound system for local musicians. A news screen continually refreshes to show the Interprofessional Twitter feed, local news reporting and weather. A second TV will show current programs, video and internet programming. It will also be available for movie nights.

The cafe will offer catering with a discount for student-held and sponsored events.

Funding for the cafe was provided by the Student Senate, University of Colorado Denver Facilities, the Interprofessional Education Initiative (REACH), Student Services and Educational Support Services, and AMC Food Services.

Childs said a fund-raising campaign is being held to raise money for outdoor furniture on the cafe’s patio. So far, $20,000 has been raised, she said.

About 30 people took part in a Wellness Walk that traveled from Building 500 to the new Commons Cafe. The walk was organized by students in the LEADS program.
