Pancakes being cooked up at the staff appreciation breakfast

Poised over a very clean plate, Sandra Andazola declared the staff appreciation breakfast Tuesday at the Anschutz Medical Campus a success.

“It’s fun to come here as a group,” said the grant specialist in the School of Medicine’s Department of Dematology, who has been with the University of Colorado for 13 years. “And it’s fun to see friends. It also shows they care about the employees.”

Some 650 employees at the Anschutz campus came in three shifts to devour about 1,900 pancakes, and as many sausages, from 7-10 a.m. in the Trivisble Room in Research 2. How many eggs were scrambled, you ask? Roughly 1,200.  Coffee? Some 18 gallons.

There have been staff appreciation events before, put on by the Staff Council, but this was the first to feature fresh-made pancakes. Behind the griddle, cook Dave Conroy, a former accountant  who now owns Chris Cakes of Colorado, cheerfully operated a batter-dispensing contraption that plopped out four pancakes at a time. He then flipped the flapjacks on the griddle and occasionally in a high arc onto someone’s plate.

How were they? Let’s turn to our freshly appointed food critic.

 “The pancakes? Hot and fluffy,” opined Gary Wylie, who doubles as a senior manager in Dermatology. “The sausages? Amazing. Flavorful. Easy to chew.”

Wylie, who’s been with CU for 22 years, said this was the first such breakfast he’d attended and that he liked the “team spirit.” 

Emily Warren, with CU for six years, was finishing up the meal with two pals from the Colorado Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute.

“It’s great to share this with people who work here,” she said.

Her CCTSI colleague Galit Mankin, with CU since 1998, agreed.

“It’s a nice gesture,” she said, adding with a smile, “There should be more!”
