AURORA, Colo. – University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus employees who have reached milestone years of service were recognized at a luncheon today on the Anschutz Medical Campus.

About 200 employees were celebrated in the Trivisible Conference Room in Research 2. The annual ceremony recognizes employees who have completed five, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 years of service, or even longer. This year two employees were recognized for their 35 years with the university: Diane Lenfest, College of Nursing, and Betty Phelps, Office of Student Affairs.

Also highlighted were the 2011 Staff Council Employees of the Month at the University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus.

After lunch, Kevin Jacobs, assistant vice chancellor for human resources, read off the names of all honorees by department or college. “You’ve dedicated a major portion of your lives to serving this university,” he said. “Because of you, the university is able to advance its mission to be a diverse, teaching and learning community that creates, discovers and applies knowledge to improve the health and well being of Colorado and the world. That’s a big deal, and you contribute in so many ways.”

Also thanking the employees during the ceremony were Lilly Marks, vice president for health affairs of the University of Colorado and executive vice chancellor for the Anschutz Medical Campus, and Chancellor Don Elliman.

Marks said, “This gathering today represents literally thousands of years of collective experience and we thank you, all of our honorees. You are the backbone of our institution and our campus. I’m really proud to call you colleagues and really fortunate to call so many of you personal friends.”

Elliman, who became chancellor two months ago, joked that “Lilly’s been here 36 years; I think I’ve been here 35 hours.” He said he was in awe to be in the company of employees who have put in so many years of service.

“It’s an interesting group (here) in that there are so many different professions in this room,” Elliman said. “There are so many different skill sets, but you all come together to create one university and that’s the University of Colorado and it couldn’t be the university that it is without your help. You often don’t get that phone call to say ‘thank you’, so we’re here to do that today.”

Deborah Makray, Staff Council chair, joined Jacobs for the presentation of the 2011 Staff Council Employees of the Month. They included David Tilton (March), Linda Theus-Lee (April), Jesse Walklett (May), Ruby Nugent (June), Joseph Kimitch (July), Newman Forrester (August), Sara Honda (November) and Lindsay Austin (December).

Lenfest, one of two employees recognized for a remarkable 35 years of service, said she started at University Hospital on 9th Avenue and two weeks later moved to the Department of Biophysics and Genetics in the School of Medicine, also on the old 9th Avenue campus.

“There are many people with whom I’ve had the pleasure to work over the many years, at 9th Avenue and now at Anschutz,” Lenfest said. “These are people who work hard, but also like to laugh — they know who they are!”

The honorees will receive certificates via campus mail and also receive an invitation by email to access an online gift selection catalogue.
