University of Colorado Hospital

AURORA, Colo. - University of Colorado Hospital physicians and staff responded as one of the best trauma centers in the nation early this morning after the shooting at an Aurora movie theater, according to one of the attending physicians.

The most critically wounded patients were taken to UCH, which treated 23 patients, said Dr. Comilla Sasson, assistant professor of emergency medicine in the School of Medicine.

Dr. Comilla Sasson "Because we're the university and one of the top hospitals in the state we got the most critically ill patients. We've got neurosurgery, cardiothorasic surgeons, orthopedics, etc. I think everyone came together very quickly," Sasson said. "We're technically a Level Two trauma center, but we do have physicians who work in all specialties and tonight I would say we functioned as one of the best trauma centers in the country, honestly, because of our physicians and support staff."
