AURORA, Colo. – An overnight fire at 1747 Peoria Street in Aurora caused two deaths and injured 15. Investigators are looking at what caused the fire.
We have confirmed that the two fatalities are not connected to the university, and no students remain in the care of the hospital.
The damaged apartment building is located just across the street from the Anschutz Medical Campus, so early today university representatives began reaching out to offer assistance to any students who may be tenants injured or displaced by the fire.
Initially, a second apartment building, at 1777 Peoria, also was evacuated as a safety precaution, but those tenants have been allowed to return.
Cheryl Gibson, Student Life, has been working throughout today to gather information and offer support for any university students affected by the fire.
“The campus came together quickly in a show of solidarity and strength to provide our displaced students with housing and immediate assistance. Unfortunately, many have lost everything including all forms of identification, clothing, furniture and school necessities such as laptops. Apartment dwellers do not always carry insurance to cover replacement costs. Students are going to need cash to help them replace lost items,” said Charlotte Klaus, associate dean for Finance, Budget and Administration at the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences

–Counseling: Confidential crisis counseling is available in Ed 2 N, Student Services Suite
For students who may have lost their University-issued photo ID in the fire, the replacement fee will be waived.
CU students who are tenants are safe, but have both immediate and long-term needs, paricularly need of cash. In the future, they will probably need furniture and other supplies to refurnish their apartments.
A fund has been established by concerned CU employees to help the students cover costs they incur because of the emergency. The fund is at the bank located in the apartment buildings on the north side of campus. If you wish to make a contribution, make your check payable to the Apartment Fire Fund. Please note that contributions are not tax deductible and this fund is not controlled by the university. The bank is accepting cash and checks.
