AURORA, Colo. (Feb. 5, 2010) – An ambitious technology project at University of Colorado Hospital (UCH) will generate more than 150 jobs on the Anschutz Medical Campus. Over the next three years, UCH also will spend $67 million dollars to implement an integrated, patient-centered electronic medical record across all clinical areas.

Epic Systems Corporation is the most advanced healthcare software in the world. It will bring an integrated computer system to UCH to improve the safety and quality in our inpatient and outpatient environments.

“The safety of our patients and the quality of their care at UCH is always our number one priority,” said Bruce Schroffel, President and CEO of University of Colorado Hospital. “Epic will help ensure that all clinical areas in the hospital have access to the same patient information. That will also allow us to be more efficient in documenting patient care, communicating patient needs and enhancing clinical research.”

Schroffel adds UCH also is bringing jobs to the local community. “The implementation of Epic will mean dozens of jobs brought to the Colorado economy. At the peak of the project in 2011, UCH will have added nearly 160 jobs to the local workforce,” said Schroffel.

More than 75 people have already been hired to work on UCH’s Epic implementation. The average salary for individuals involved in the implementation is $36 an hour or $74,000 a year.

Epic also will ensure efficiency for UCH patients in both the inpatient setting and in the outpatient clinics. It will streamline the hospital process of gathering information about insurance, medical history and medications during the registration process. The new system means clinicians will only have to gather that information once and it will be shared across the hospital, and in many cases we will be able to share relevant and appropriate information with other community providers. It also will enable our patients to have immediate and direct access to many aspects of their medical record.

The University of Colorado Hospital is the Rocky Mountain region’s leading academic medical center, and has been recognized as one of the United States’ best hospitals, according to U.S. News & World Report. It is best known as an innovator in patient care and often as one of the first hospitals to bring new medicine to patients’ bedsides. Located at the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colo., the hospital’s physicians are all affiliated with the University of Colorado School of Medicine, part of the University of Colorado system.
